search_schema
Finds tables, views and functions that match your words.
Works in read modeTool sets: query · meta · full
You might ask
“Where do we keep customer emails?”
Your assistant may call search_schema to answer.
How it works
- Ranks objects in the schema index by how well their names, columns and comments match the query (TF-IDF).
- With local embeddings switched on (
--embeddings local), it also ranks by meaning and fuses both lists, so "money we're owed" can findinvoices. - The server's instructions tell the assistant to start here and to treat a table that isn't returned as one that doesn't exist.
Parameters
querystringrequired- Natural-language or keyword search, e.g. "customer email".
What your assistant reads
The description nexql-mcp sends with the tool. It's how the assistant decides when to use it.
Search the live, auto-indexed database schema using natural language or keywords to find tables, views, materialized views, and functions matching the query. Start here before writing SQL, then describe_object the tables you will use — do not assume a table exists without finding it here.
